Expectations

I wasn't at all fond of The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, but this past weekend, The New York Times Book Review gave author Barry Lyga's new book Boy Toy quite a good review.

On the other hand,I liked Neal Shusterman's Everlost a lot. The same issue of The New York Times Book Review, carried a review of Shusterman's new book, Unwind, which was more positive than negative but still a little mixed.

I know I'm biased, but I'll still probably read Unwind first.

I thought it was interesting to note that it was Ned Vizzini who reviewed "Unwind". Do YA authors often review other YA books for the NYT? I blush to say that I don't read the NYT reviews regularly.

Oh...for the record, I thought Unwind was interesting and well done, though it wasn't quite the read I was expecting. But I won't be posting my full thoughts on it (as I expected to), for reasons referred to in today's blog post.

I noticed that Ned Vizzini was the reviewer, too. I know that when I respond to a book, I tend to notice a lot of things that nonwriters don't, so I find it interesting to see what writers have to say about other writers' work.

I read the NYTBook Review for a decade or more, and then stopped because the family member who bought the Sunday paper and passed the review section on to me gave it up, and I didn't have time to keep up with the review, alone, forget about the entire paper. (I used to fall months behind in reading it.) But recently I've tried to check out its on-line version from time to time.

I wasn't a huge fan of Fan Boy, either, but I thought Boy Toy was outstanding.
